British Airways and Virgin Atlantic both fly direct from London Heathrow to Velana International Airport in around 10 hours 20 minutes, using Boeing 787s. One-stop routes through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul take 12 to 16 hours but often cost less and offer more departure times. The best weather runs December to March, which is also the most expensive window. April and November give you most of the sunshine at noticeably lower rates.
How long is the flight from London to the Maldives?
The direct flight is about 10 hours 20 minutes outbound. Coming home takes closer to 11 hours 30 minutes, because of headwinds. The distance is roughly 5,300 miles.
Both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic operate the route from Heathrow Terminal 5, landing at Velana International Airport, and both fly the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Frequency varies by season, with the fullest schedules over the December to March peak, so it is worth checking current timetables when you plan.
The Maldives is five hours ahead of the UK in winter, four ahead during British Summer Time. Evening departures from London land mid-morning in Malé, which works well: you clear the airport and reach your island in time for lunch.
Direct or one stop?
Direct is faster and simpler, particularly with children. One-stop routes through Dubai with Emirates, Doha with Qatar Airways, Abu Dhabi with Etihad, Istanbul with Turkish Airlines or Colombo with SriLankan add three to six hours but often cost less and offer far more departure times.
There is a third option worth knowing. Breaking the journey in Dubai for two or three nights turns a long-haul flight into a two-centre holiday, and it is one of the most common requests we handle from UK guests.
The bit most guides skip: your resort transfer
Landing in Malé is not arriving at your resort. Every island needs a transfer, and it shapes both your cost and your arrival day.
Speedboat resorts in North and South Malé Atoll are reached in 15 to 90 minutes, run at any hour, and suit an evening arrival.
Seaplane resorts across the wider atolls take 25 to 55 minutes and are spectacular, but they only fly in daylight. Land after about 3.30pm and you may wait until the next morning, sometimes with an airport hotel night. With a 10-hour flight behind you, that matters.

When should UK travellers go?
December to March is the dry northeast monsoon: calm seas, clear skies, best diving visibility. It is also peak, and it overlaps with Christmas, New Year and February half-term, so rates are at their highest and the best villas go months ahead.
April and November are the shoulder months. You still get around eight hours of sunshine a day with temperatures in the high twenties, at meaningfully lower rates. For couples without school-holiday constraints, this is the best value in the calendar.
May to October is the southwest monsoon. Showers are usually short rather than all-day, prices are lowest, and surf conditions are at their best.

What does a Maldives holiday cost from the UK?
Rates are quoted in US dollars and usually include meals at some level.
- 4-star resorts: from around USD 300 to 500 per night
- 5-star resorts: around USD 500 to 1,500 per night
- Ultra-luxury and private islands: USD 1,500 to 5,000 and above

The meal plan matters more than people expect. A full board or all-inclusive rate often works out cheaper than bed and breakfast once you have paid for dinners and drinks on an island where there is nowhere else to eat. Complimentary half board is sometimes included as part of a resort offer, though rarely over the festive period.
