in the Maldives
Not all Maldives resorts have a house reef — and those that do vary enormously in quality. The resorts below are ranked by reef quality score, combining coral health, marine life diversity, accessibility from shore, and snorkelling conditions.
The best house reefs in the Maldives are at Milaidhoo, Soneva Fushi, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Anantara Kihavah, and Raffles Maldives Meradhoo. At these resorts the reef begins within metres of the shoreline and supports extraordinary marine biodiversity accessible without a boat.

Everything you need to know
about house reefs
What is a house reef?
A house reef is a coral reef directly next to the resort island — accessible by swimming from the beach or villa steps without a boat. Not all Maldives resorts have them.
Reef quality varies enormously
Some house reefs are shallow and fish-rich within metres of shore. Others require a 10-minute swim. The best have hard coral walls dropping to 20+ metres just offshore.
Best time for snorkelling
November to April brings calmer seas and better visibility — typically 20-30 metres. May to October has manta ray and whale shark season in Baa and Ari Atolls.
Baa Atoll leads for reef quality
Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve has some of the healthiest coral in the Maldives. Milaidhoo, Soneva Fushi, and Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru all sit within the reserve.
Overwater villas and reefs
At the best reef resorts — Anantara Kihavah, Milaidhoo — guests snorkel directly from overwater villa steps into the reef below.
Marine life to expect
A quality Maldives house reef offers reef sharks, sea turtles, manta rays, napoleon wrasse, parrotfish, and dense schools of reef fish within snorkelling distance of shore.
