The verdict

The Halcyon Private Isles Maldives combines three things rarely available together in the Maldives: a 10/10 house reef accessible directly from the beach, genuine ultra-luxury accommodation and service, and the most remote location of any major luxury resort in the country. Now operating under Marriott's Autograph Collection following its November 2025 rebrand from Raffles Maldives Meradhoo, the resort spans two private islands in Gaafu Alifu Atoll — one with beachfront villas, the other an entirely separate overwater enclave — where the surrounding reef has developed in conditions of extraordinary pristinity. For guests who want the finest house reef in the Maldives combined with genuine seclusion and are willing to make the journey south, this remains exceptional.

The rebrand: what changed, what didn't

Effective 1 November 2025, the resort ceased operating under Raffles Hotels & Resorts and became The Halcyon Private Isles Maldives, Autograph Collection — part of Marriott International's portfolio and the brand's debut Autograph Collection property in the Maldives. Existing bookings were honoured unchanged through the transition, and the resort's core team, butler service, restaurants, dive centre, and spa continued operating without interruption. The island previously operated as Jumeirah Dhevanafushi before becoming Raffles Maldives Meradhoo in 2019 — this is the property's third brand identity, though the physical island, reef, and operational team remain the same.

Getting there

Gaafu Alifu Atoll — one of the most remote luxury atolls in the Maldives, near the southern edge of the archipelago. Reached via a direct seaplane flight of approximately 90 minutes from Velana International Airport, or via a domestic flight to Kaadedhdhoo or Kooddoo Airport followed by a speedboat transfer. Private jets can land at Gan International Airport with onward seaplane or speedboat connection.

The house reef

The house reef remains one of the finest at any luxury resort in the Maldives — by independent diving publications, by experienced travellers who have stayed at multiple Maldives resorts, and by our own specialists who visit the country regularly. The reef is accessible directly from the beach and from the steps of the overwater villas — no boat required, no booking, no schedule. Reef sharks patrol the reef edge and are regularly encountered within metres of the shoreline. Turtles nest on the island and forage year-round. The coral is dense, diverse, and in extraordinary health, a benefit of the resort's deeply remote location and minimal surrounding development.

The villas

38 villas across a two-island layout: 22 island villas (including the three-bedroom Halcyon Grand Estate, a 1,250 sqm flagship residence with a 40-metre private infinity pool) and 16 overwater villas in a separate enclave, all with private pools and ranging from approximately 220 to 300 sqm. The overwater villas feature floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic Indian Ocean views from the bedroom, bathroom, and living room. A 2024 refurbishment refreshed the spa, arrival jetty, and the Yuzu restaurant.

Dining and service

Three restaurants and two bars span Asian, Mediterranean, and Nikkei cuisine, with Yuzu — the resort's Peruvian-Nikkei venue — as the signature dining experience. Personalised butler service continues for every villa, alongside a PADI-certified dive centre, an overwater spa and wellness sanctuary, and a Kids' Club with a dedicated Kids' Butler — a notable addition under the new ownership structure that broadens the resort's appeal to families, not just couples.

Who is The Halcyon Private Isles for?

This resort suits divers and snorkellers who prioritise reef quality above almost anything else, couples and honeymooners seeking genuine remoteness, and Marriott Bonvoy members who want to redeem points at an ultra-luxury Maldives property — something not previously possible under the Raffles brand. The long transfer time (seaplane or domestic flight plus speedboat) makes this a poor fit for short stays; our specialists recommend a minimum of 5-7 nights to justify the journey.

What we love
✓ One of the finest house reefs in the Maldives, accessible from the beach
✓ Genuine remoteness — among the most secluded major luxury resorts
✓ Two-island layout creates real separation between beach and overwater stays
✓ Marriott Bonvoy points redemption now available
✓ New Kids' Club broadens appeal beyond couples-only
✓ The Halcyon Grand Estate — one of the most extraordinary villas in the Maldives
Consider carefully
— Long transfer: roughly 90-minute seaplane or domestic flight plus speedboat
— Recent rebrand — some online listings and reviews still reference the Raffles name
— Third brand identity since 2011 — worth confirming current service standards with your specialist before booking
— Remoteness makes short stays impractical
