Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
Review 2026

The verdict
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is the original icon of Maldives luxury — the resort that introduced the underwater restaurant to the world in 2004 and has been a benchmark property ever since. Ithaa Undersea Restaurant remains the most photographed dining venue in the Maldives. The resort spans two islands connected by a 500-metre footbridge — Rangali for adults and fine dining, Rangali Finolhu for families and water sports. Year-round whale shark encounters in South Ari Atoll make this one of the finest resorts for serious marine enthusiasts.
Getting there
South Ari Atoll — 30-minute seaplane from Male. Year-round whale shark snorkelling in the surrounding atoll waters.
Ithaa Undersea Restaurant
Ithaa is the most famous restaurant in the Maldives and one of the most extraordinary dining experiences on earth. Set 5 metres below the lagoon surface with 180-degree panoramic acrylic windows, guests dine surrounded by the living reef — coral, fish, and occasionally reef sharks visible on all sides. Opened in 2004 as the world's first all-glass undersea restaurant, it has inspired dozens of imitations but remains the original and finest. The menu is international fine dining with an emphasis on fresh local seafood. Advance booking is essential — Ithaa fills weeks ahead during peak season and months ahead over Christmas and New Year.
The resort also operates The Muraka — a two-level underwater suite where guests sleep below the ocean surface, making it the world's first underwater hotel room. The Muraka is priced separately and available on enquiry through specialist travel agents only. Niche Getaways has direct access to Muraka availability and pricing.
The two-island concept
Conrad Maldives spans two islands connected by a 500-metre footbridge. Rangali Island is the adult-oriented island — the location of Ithaa, the spa retreat on its own island, and the more formal villa categories. Rangali Finolhu is the family island — larger, with more casual dining, the kids club, and water sports. The footbridge connecting the two is a pleasant five-minute walk. At night, guests sometimes find the journey inconvenient — particularly during rain — and this is the only genuine logistical friction in an otherwise exceptional resort experience.
Marine life — South Ari Atoll
South Ari Atoll is the finest location in the Maldives for year-round whale shark encounters. The whale sharks of South Ari have been individually identified and tracked by researchers for decades and are present in the atoll throughout the year — not seasonally. The resort's dive centre runs regular whale shark excursions and the team's knowledge of where the sharks are feeding on any given day is unmatched. Manta rays are encountered seasonally. The house reef at Rangali is excellent — accessible from the beach with diverse coral and year-round reef shark presence.
The villas
150 villas across beach and overwater categories spanning both islands. The Over Water Bungalows on Rangali are the original Conrad overwater villa category — opened in 1997 and regularly refurbished to maintain their position among the finest in the Maldives. The Two-Bedroom Water Villa is the family pinnacle on Rangali Finolhu. The Muraka — the two-level underwater suite — is the ultimate Conrad Maldives experience and one of the most extraordinary accommodation options anywhere in the world.
