The verdict

Niyama Private Islands is the most active and energetic ultra-luxury resort in the Maldives. Subsix — the world's first underwater nightclub — and on-site surf breaks make it genuinely unique. The two-island Play and Chill concept gives guests both activity and retreat in the same resort. For guests who find conventional Maldives resorts too passive and want an active, social, experience-rich stay, Niyama delivers everything.

Getting there

Dhaalu Atoll — 30-40 minute seaplane from Velana International Airport. Daylight arrivals only. The seaplane lands on the lagoon between the two islands.

Play island and Chill island

Niyama spans two islands connected by a bridge. Play island is the active island — home to Subsix, the surf breaks, the skate bowl, the ice cream parlour, and the resort's social energy. Chill island is the quieter, more contemplative counterpart — home to the spa, yoga pavilion, and a more serene villa environment. Guests can move freely between both. The concept is deliberately polarised — it gives the resort something that genuinely suits both the active traveller and the one who wants to decompress alongside them.

Subsix — the underwater nightclub

Subsix is the world's first underwater nightclub, positioned 6 metres below the surface of the Dhaalu Atoll lagoon. On DJ nights — typically Friday and Saturday — Subsix hosts live DJ sets in a glass-enclosed space with reef fish visible through the curved acrylic walls. The experience is genuinely extraordinary. During the day, Subsix operates as an underwater restaurant. Booking is essential for DJ nights, and the experience is consistently cited by guests as the most memorable of the entire holiday.

Surfing at Niyama

Niyama Private Islands has direct access to surf breaks in Dhaalu Atoll, accessible by boat from the resort. The breaks suit intermediate to advanced surfers and deliver consistent conditions during the right swell windows. A dedicated surf programme operates from the resort, with guides and coaching available. Niyama is one of very few ultra-luxury Maldives resorts with a serious surfing programme — making it unique for guests who want the finest resort experience and genuine surf access in the same destination.

The villas

134 beach and water villas across Play and Chill islands. The Water Studios are the entry water villa category — compact but thoughtfully designed with direct lagoon access and sunset views. The Chill Pool Water Villas on Chill island are the premium overwater category — larger, with private pools and a quieter position. The Beach Pool Villas on both islands are generously sized with garden pools. The Two Bedroom Water Villas accommodate families with separate sleeping areas and two pools.

The dining

Seven dining venues across both islands. Edge is the signature overwater restaurant. Subsix for underwater dining and DJ nights. Tribal for beachside Maldivian and international cuisine. Nu for wholesome, health-focused dining. The Deli on Play island for casual daytime eating. The variety is excellent for a resort of Niyama's size, and the quality is consistently high across all venues.

Who is Niyama for?

Active travellers who want the finest resort experience alongside genuine surf access. Couples where one partner wants activity and the other wants wellness — the Play and Chill concept resolves this perfectly. Groups celebrating occasions who want a social, energetic resort with Subsix as the centrepiece event. Guests who have experienced passive Maldives resorts before and want more energy and variety in their stay. Those who prioritise maximum seclusion and silence should look at more remote boutique options.
