The verdict

Naladhu translates to "beautiful little island" in Dhivehi, and the name is not an overstatement. With only 20 beachfront houses, a dedicated Kuwaanu butler for every villa, and a non-reciprocal access policy that ensures the island remains exclusively for its own guests while they can freely explore the dining and facilities of the neighbouring Anantara properties, Naladhu has engineered an experience that feels like visiting a private island — while having access to 8 restaurants and full resort facilities across 3 islands. The 30-minute speedboat transfer from the airport is its practical masterstroke: unmatched intimacy without the seaplane timing constraint.

Getting there

Veligandu Huraa Island, South Malé Atoll — 30 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport. No seaplane. Night arrivals are fully supported. Your Naladhu representative meets you at the airport and accompanies you on the transfer. A luxury yacht upgrade is available as an alternative for guests who want a more dramatic arrival.

The non-reciprocal access policy

Naladhu's defining feature is its access structure — one of the most intelligent in the Maldives. Naladhu guests can visit and dine at the neighbouring Anantara Dhigu and Anantara Veli resorts freely, accessed by a short 2-3 minute pontoon boat. Guests of Anantara Dhigu and Veli cannot visit Naladhu. This means Naladhu's own island remains exclusively for its 20 houses — no strangers at the pool, no one else on the beach — while its guests have access to eight restaurants, two spas, and full resort facilities across three islands. It is the most elegant solution to the "private island versus facilities" trade-off in the Maldives.

The 20 houses

Naladhu does not have villas — it has houses. The distinction is deliberate: each of the 20 beachfront houses is designed to feel like a private residence rather than a hotel room. At a minimum of 300 square metres each, with private pools large enough to actually swim in (rare in the Maldives), steam rooms, private gardens with curated tropical plants maintained by the island's resident horticulturalist, and a swing bed on the covered terrace that becomes a recurring favourite of every guest who encounters it. The houses face the Indian Ocean directly — the ocean-facing rooms look out across open water with no reef visible at the surface, creating a sensation of exposure to the full force of the ocean that is very different from the typical lagoon view.

Insider tip

The Ocean Pool House is the finest villa category — the view across the open ocean rather than the lagoon is unusual in the Maldives and particularly atmospheric. The swing bed on the villa terrace is the finest spot on the island for an afternoon in the shade with a book. Use the pontoon transfer to Anantara Dhigu specifically for breakfast at least once — the breakfast buffet there is more extensive than at Naladhu, and the overwater spa at Dhigu is well worth a session. The resort's sunset dolphin encounters, arranged with the Nirvana luxury yacht, are a reliable highlight — book on your first day.

The Kuwaanu butler

Every house at Naladhu is served by a dedicated Kuwaanu butler — available around the clock. The name Kuwaanu comes from the Maldivian word for a trusted friend. The role is closer to that description than to a conventional hotel butler. Guests consistently note that their Kuwaanu learns their preferences quickly and applies them without being reminded: the coffee temperature, the timing of turn-down, the specific arrangement of in-villa dining. Long-term guests at Naladhu — and there are many, who return year after year — often cite their Kuwaanu relationship specifically as the primary reason for coming back.

The dining

The Living Room on Naladhu island is the resort's main restaurant — open all day, with a focus on fresh seafood, Maldivian cooking, and a menu designed around the chef's daily catch. Breakfast by the lagoon, prepared to order from a broad menu, is consistently the finest meal of the day. Access to Anantara Dhigu adds the award-winning SEA.FIRE.SALT. restaurant, an overwater teppanyaki venue (Origami), and several casual dining options. Access to Anantara Veli adds the Baan Huraa Thai restaurant. Eight restaurants in total, accessible across three islands by a 2-3 minute boat. For a 20-villa island, the dining breadth is extraordinary.

Who is Naladhu for?

Couples and honeymooners who want beach villa intimacy — not overwater villas — and the finest speedboat-access private island experience in South Malé Atoll. Guests who value a personal butler relationship and want an island that genuinely feels private without the seaplane daylight restriction. Returning Maldives visitors who have experienced overwater villa luxury and want something different. Guests comparing Naladhu with Gili Lankanfushi in North Malé Atoll should consider that both prioritise service and intimacy at a similar villa count. Naladhu has the dining advantage of three connected islands, while Gili has Mr Friday butler and the better house reef. For those who do not require overwater accommodation, Naladhu is the finest private island experience accessible by speedboat in the Maldives.
