The verdict

Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi is the most ambitious resort development in the history of the Maldives. Three islands, 11 restaurants, the largest overwater villas in the archipelago, and a private island exclusive-use option that sets a new benchmark for luxury in the Indian Ocean. Opened in 2021, it remains the resort that most consistently generates superlatives — and on every meaningful dimension, it earns them. For guests who want the absolute maximum the Maldives can offer in a single property, Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi is the answer.

Getting there

South Malé Atoll — 45-minute speedboat from Velana International Airport. No seaplane required, which means night arrivals are fully supported. This is one of very few ultra-luxury resorts in the Maldives that combines the grand scale of a seaplane-atoll property with the logistical convenience of speedboat access.

Three islands

Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi spans three islands. The main resort island hosts the majority of the villas and restaurants. The Private Island is a separate exclusive-use island available for buyout — accommodating up to 24 guests across 6 villas with dedicated staff, private chef, and complete exclusivity. The third island houses the Waldorf Astoria Spa — one of the largest resort spas in the Maldives. The three-island structure gives Ithaafushi a scale that is genuinely unprecedented in the Maldives luxury segment.

The villas

The overwater villas at Waldorf Astoria are the largest in the Maldives. The entry-level Reef Villa starts at 587 sqm — substantially larger than the finest overwater villas at most competing resorts. The Grand Overwater Villa at 1,533 sqm is the largest overwater villa in the Maldives, with its own pool, slide, butler kitchen, and panoramic sunset views across the South Malé Atoll lagoon. Beach villas are equally generous. Every villa category has a private pool, and the Waldorf Astoria butler programme ensures each villa is personally staffed throughout the stay.

The dining — 11 restaurants

Eleven restaurants across the resort make Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi the most dining-diverse property in the Maldives by a significant margin. The offering covers Japanese cuisine at Yamazato (with premium omakase programme), Chinese at ShuiQi, Italian at Pebbles, Mediterranean at Terra, Indian at Paan, fresh seafood at Fish & Crab, and the Waldorf Astoria Lounge for afternoon tea. The quality across all restaurants is consistently high. For guests who value dining variety as a primary resort criterion, Ithaafushi is in a category of one.

The spa

The Waldorf Astoria Spa occupies its own island and is among the largest resort spas in the Indian Ocean. Treatment rooms, vitality pools, a hammam, an ice room, a sensory lounge, and a dedicated relaxation building are all part of the facility. The treatment programme draws from global wellness traditions. For couples who want both the finest villa experience and a comprehensive spa, Ithaafushi delivers both without compromise.

Who is Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi for?

Guests who want the absolute maximum the Maldives can offer — the largest villas, the most restaurants, and the finest spa — in a single property. Families or groups who want both scale and exclusivity, with the Private Island buyout offering the ultimate in group luxury. Couples celebrating significant occasions who want the most dramatic setting possible. Guests who have experienced the finest resorts globally and expect Waldorf Astoria service standards applied to the Maldives context.
