Soneva Fushi
Review 2026

The verdict
Soneva Fushi is the best all-round resort in the Maldives. Not the most private, not the most design-forward, not the most expensive — but the most complete. The combination of the finest accessible house reef in Baa Atoll, 14 restaurants of genuine quality, the best kids programme in the Maldives, and a service philosophy refined over three decades makes it the benchmark. If you can only go to one Maldives resort in your lifetime, go to Soneva Fushi.
Getting there
Baa Atoll — 30-minute seaplane from Velana International Airport. Daylight hours only. Guests arriving on late international flights must overnight in Male. The domestic flight alternative via Dharavandhoo is available and allows more flexibility on arrival timing.
The house reef
This is what makes Soneva Fushi genuinely exceptional. The house reef wraps around the island in a near-complete circle, accessible from the beach at multiple entry points and directly from the steps of the overwater villas. No boat required. No booking required. Walk into the water at any time and within 30 seconds you are in a marine ecosystem of extraordinary density.
The reef has nine designated dive sites around the island, each with distinct coral formations and marine life profiles. The drop-off on the northern side begins at 3 metres and falls to 30 metres within a short swim from shore. Reef sharks patrol the wall. Eagle rays cruise the sandy channels. Turtles are encountered so regularly that returning guests have names for individuals. During manta season — June to November — Hanifaru Bay is 20 minutes by boat and the world's largest manta ray feeding aggregation is accessible as a day trip.
Night snorkelling reveals bioluminescent plankton and nocturnal species. The reef is, simply, extraordinary — and it is what competitors like Soneva Jani cannot replicate.
The villas
Soneva Fushi has 63 villas ranging from beach jungle residences to overwater villas with private pools and slides. The jungle villas — hidden among dense vegetation with no sight line to any neighbouring villa — are unlike anything else in the Maldives. The overwater villas have glass-floor panels, private pools, and slides directly into the lagoon.
Villa sizing is generous throughout — the smallest beach villas are over 300 sqm including outdoor areas. The design aesthetic is deliberately rustic — driftwood, natural fibre, open-air bathrooms — rather than the sleek minimalism of newer ultra-luxury properties. Some guests find this charming. A small minority find it dated. Both reactions are valid.
The dining
14 restaurants. Soneva Fushi has the most diverse dining programme of any resort in the Maldives, and the quality across the entire programme is extraordinary. Shades of Green is the world's first vegan resort restaurant. The Out of the Blue overwater restaurant delivers fine dining with lagoon views. The Underground Cellar hosts private wine tastings. Private dining anywhere on the island — in the jungle, on the sandbank, on the reef platform at sunset — is available and flawlessly delivered.
The children's programme
The Den is the finest kids club in the Maldives. An ice cream parlour (free, unlimited, daily), a chocolate lab, a cinema, a nature programme, and an after-dark programme running until 10pm. Children do not want to leave. The resident astronomer runs dedicated stargazing sessions. For teenagers, water sports include wake-boarding, kite-surfing, and catamaran sailing.
The observatory
Soneva Fushi has a resident astronomer and a rooftop observatory. Evening stargazing sessions are open to all guests and are consistently described in guest reviews as one of the most memorable experiences of the stay. The night sky over Baa Atoll — without light pollution — is extraordinary.
Who is Soneva Fushi for?
Soneva Fushi is for families who want the finest kids programme in the Maldives combined with adult experiences of genuine quality. For serious divers and snorkellers. For food lovers who want 14 restaurants of real quality on one island. For couples who want an overwater villa with a slide and a retractable roof. For anyone who wants the most complete resort experience in the Maldives.
It is not for guests who require the most minimalist design aesthetic, the most remote location, or the most exclusive atmosphere. For pure privacy consider Milaidhoo or The Nautilus. For pure design consider Cheval Blanc Randheli. For pure remoteness consider Raffles Meradhoo.
