Velaa Private Island
Review 2026

The verdict
Velaa Private Island is one of the most complete ultra-luxury resorts in the Maldives. The only golf course in the country, Aragu restaurant at the top of its game, 47 villas with extraordinary privacy, and a sports and wellness offering that outperforms almost every competitor. For couples who want both exceptional dining and serious sporting activity — golf, diving, water sports — Velaa is the answer.
Getting there
Noonu Atoll — 45 minutes by seaplane from Velana International Airport, or 15 minutes from Maafaru International Airport for guests arriving by private jet. Seaplanes operate during daylight hours only, so plan international arrivals for before 13:00 to guarantee a same-day connection. The resort coordinates transfers seamlessly.
The golf course
This is what sets Velaa apart from every other resort in the Maldives. The nine-hole golf course at Velaa was designed by José María Olazábal — the two-time Masters champion — and managed by Troon, the leader in upscale golf course management. It stretches over the island with ocean views from every tee. Players tee off over water, play through coconut palms, and finish with the Indian Ocean as backdrop.
The Golf Academy at Velaa offers instruction for all levels, from complete beginners to established players working on their handicap. The Shot Spot Wall — a motion-activated driving range game — and the Kytti Quest board game in the Kids Club bring the golf experience to younger guests. Even guests who do not play golf find themselves spending time at the course simply for the setting.
The villas
Velaa has 47 villas — an intimate count that ensures the resort never feels crowded. 18 of the villas are built over water, positioned to face either sunrise or sunset. Villa categories range from Beach Pool Villas from 287sqm to Deluxe Beach Pool Villas at 313sqm, Sunrise and Sunset Water Pool Villas at 223–245sqm, a Romantic Pool Residence at 598sqm, and the four-bedroom Velaa Private Residence at 1,324sqm for complete family or group privacy.
Every villa has a private infinity pool, butler service, wine fridge, Dyson hair dryers, B&O TV and sound system, and luxury book collection. The design is contemporary and precise — clean lines, natural materials, considered detail. Thoughtfully designed and rigorously tested, the villas offer boundless rooms to play, to reconnect, and to create memories.
Aragu restaurant
Aragu is one of the finest restaurants in the Maldives. A contemporary tasting menu restaurant with four dining areas — including a private chef's table and an overwater terrace — Aragu presents Maldivian ingredients through a contemporary culinary lens. The wine programme is exceptional by any standard. The restaurant takes a limited number of covers per service, ensuring the pace is unhurried and the attention meticulous.
Beyond Aragu, Velaa has 4 restaurants and 3 bars in total — including Tavaru, the casual all-day restaurant, and Veli Bar, the overwater sunset bar. Private dining on the sandbank, in the lagoon, or on the reef platform is available and is one of the most requested experiences at the resort.
Eveylaa Wellbeing
The word "Eveylaa" means "Ancient" in Dhivehi. The spa at Velaa is built around the ancient healing methods of Ayurveda and eastern medicine. Two couples treatment rooms, six secluded double treatment villas suspended over water, a European-style steam room, cryotherapy chamber, and a floatation Dream Pod make it one of the most comprehensive spa facilities in the Maldives. International practitioners are resident throughout the season.
The Lha Velaa Kids Club
The newly redesigned Lha Velaa Kids Club features the iconic Velaa Seaplane playground, an Energy Studio with human-powered games including the Shot Spot Wall and the motion-activated Kytti Quest board game, and the calming Relax Haven. The Cooking and Experiment Pavilion offers hands-on activities. The club is thoughtfully crafted in collaboration with Worldwide Kids.
Who is Velaa for?
Velaa is the resort of choice for guests who want both sporting excellence and ultra-luxury hospitality. It suits golfers above all — but also serious divers, water sports enthusiasts, wellness travellers, and couples seeking complete seclusion in a Noonu Atoll setting that is among the most beautiful in the Maldives.
It is not the best choice for guests who prioritise house reef snorkelling — the reef at Velaa is good but not exceptional. For the finest house reef in the Maldives, consider Milaidhoo. For the most complete family experience, consider Soneva Fushi. For guests who want Noonu Atoll but a different aesthetic, Cheval Blanc Randheli offers French couture hospitality on the same atoll.
