JA Manafaru
Review 2026

The verdict
JA Manafaru is the finest resort in the far north of the Maldives — a destination that rewards guests who value genuine seclusion, exceptional dining, and the kind of unhurried island living that the more accessible atolls cannot replicate. The Cellar underground wine cave, the Canopy of Stars dining experience, and the sunset dolphin cruise by traditional Dhoni are among the most distinctive experiences in the Maldives. This is not a resort for those who need to be close to the airport. It is exactly right for those who want to be far from it.
Getting there
Haa Alif Atoll — 70 minutes by seaplane from Velana International Airport. This is one of the longer seaplane transfers in the Maldives, and it is entirely worth it. Seaplanes operate during daylight hours only. Plan international arrivals for before 11:00 to guarantee same-day connection. The resort also has a helicopter transfer option and coordinates private jet arrivals at Hanimaadhoo Airport.
The villas
JA Manafaru has 84 spacious villas, all with private pools and stunning direct views of the lagoon. The choice is between Beach Pool Villas on land and Water Pool Villas over the lagoon, each offering privacy and modern amenities. Villa sizes are generous throughout — from 200sqm Beach Villas to 135sqm Sunrise and Sunset Water Pool Villas, a 400sqm Deluxe Beach Villa with Family Private Pool, a 377sqm Two-Bedroom Ocean Residence, and a 2,022sqm Three-Bedroom Island Residence for groups requiring exceptional space.
Every villa has a European super king bed, partial open-air bathroom, iSpa bathtub, outdoor seating area, and luxury amenities. The design philosophy draws from the northern Maldives landscape — natural materials, warm tones, and the pervasive sense that the ocean is never more than a few steps away.
The Cellar — underground wine experience
The Cellar is a unique experience in the Maldives. An intimate underground wine cave hosting private wine and dining journeys — the first of its kind in the country. Guests descend into a candlelit space curated around exceptional wine selections and seasonal menus, with the Maldivian night sky invisible but the atmosphere of complete enclosure creating something genuinely private and memorable. For wine lovers, it is the single most distinctive dining experience available in the Maldives.
Dining
JA Manafaru has 5 restaurants and 1 bar across the resort. The main restaurant serves international cuisine with buffet and à la carte options. Destination dining experiences include Canopy of Stars — a tailor-made candlelit dinner under the open sky — and Castaway Picnic on a Secluded Sandbank, a private escape curated exclusively for two. The all-inclusive meal plan covers dining at the main venues and delivers excellent value for guests who want a predictable total cost.
The sunset dolphin cruise
The sunset dolphin cruise by traditional Dhoni is one of the most requested experiences at JA Manafaru, and with good reason. The waters around Haa Alif Atoll are home to resident spinner dolphin pods and the evening conditions — calm seas and golden light — create ideal conditions for encounters. Frequent sightings are not guaranteed but the experience of being on the water at sunset in the far north of the Maldives is exceptional regardless.
Marine life and diving
The house reef at JA Manafaru has excellent coral health and regular reef shark, turtle, and eagle ray encounters. The northern atolls are characterised by healthy coral systems that receive fewer visitors than the central atolls — the relative remoteness works in the reef's favour. Dive sites in Haa Alif include drift dives on channels and outer reef walls with hammerhead sightings seasonally. The dive centre is fully equipped and offers PADI courses for all levels.
Who is JA Manafaru for?
JA Manafaru suits couples and honeymooners who want genuine northern Maldives seclusion, exceptional dining with standout experiences like The Cellar, and a resort that does not feel like it is trying to compete with the busier central atolls. It is also well-suited to families thanks to the diverse villa options and all-inclusive availability.
It is not for guests who need to be close to Velana Airport — the 70-minute seaplane transfer is real and requires careful arrival planning. For guests who want northern Maldives but are considering other options, Soneva Secret in Haa Dhaalu Atoll offers ultra-boutique seclusion at the absolute pinnacle of the tier.
