Soneva Secret
Review 2026

The verdict
Soneva Secret is the most remote and exclusive property in the Soneva collection — and one of the most private resorts in the Maldives by any measure. With just 14 water retreats on an uninhabited island in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, the guest-to-staff ratio and level of personal attention are extraordinary. The journey to reach it is long. The price is significant. But for guests who have experienced Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani and want to go further — deeper into the archipelago, deeper into seclusion — Soneva Secret delivers something no other resort in the Maldives currently matches.
Getting there
Haa Dhaalu Atoll — the northernmost region of the Maldives, closer to India than to Malé. The journey involves a domestic flight from Velana International Airport to Hanimaadhoo Airport followed by a speedboat transfer to the island. Total travel time from Malé is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Soneva also operates a private charter seaplane service for guests who prefer a direct aerial transfer, which reduces the journey to approximately 90 minutes. The remoteness is part of the experience — guests arrive knowing they have truly left the world behind.
The concept
Soneva Secret opened in 2023 as the third property in Sonu Shivdasani's Soneva collection, and it is deliberately the most exclusive. 14 water retreats — no beach villas, no large resort infrastructure, no marina village. The island is small, uninhabited before development, and surrounded by one of the healthiest reef systems in the northern Maldives. The Soneva philosophy — barefoot luxury, environmental commitment, no single-use plastic, a resident marine biologist — is applied here at its most concentrated.
Each retreat has its own private pool, a dedicated Mr or Ms Friday (Soneva's term for a personal butler), and direct water access from the villa deck. The absence of beach villas is a deliberate statement: Soneva Secret is built for guests who want to live above the water, surrounded by the ocean, with as little separation between themselves and the reef as architecture allows.
The villas
14 water retreats ranging from one-bedroom to multi-bedroom configurations. The design language is consistent with Soneva's established aesthetic — natural materials, thatched roofs, reclaimed wood, organic forms — but the scale here is more generous than at Soneva Fushi and more intimate than at Soneva Jani. Each retreat has a private infinity pool that appears to merge with the lagoon, a sun deck for dining and stargazing, and interiors that feel genuinely crafted rather than produced.
The two-bedroom and three-bedroom retreats are among the most impressive multi-room overwater configurations in the Maldives, offering families or groups a genuinely private villa experience without the compromise of adjacent rooms. Soneva Secret also offers whole-island buyout for groups who want the entire resort to themselves.
The dining
Dining at Soneva Secret follows the Soneva model: a central open-air restaurant, a raw and living food kitchen, a chocolate and ice cream lab, a cinema dining experience, and in-retreat private dining available at any hour. The Soneva approach to food — organic where possible, waste-minimised, heavily vegetable-forward while remaining genuinely indulgent — is executed with particular care here given the small number of guests being served at any one time.
The seafood programme draws on the northern atolls, where fish stocks are less depleted than in the more heavily trafficked central atolls. The resident chef works closely with local fishermen for the daily catch. Private beach dinners and sandbank experiences are arranged by the Mr or Ms Friday team and represent some of the most memorable dining experiences available anywhere in the Maldives.
The reef and marine life
The reef system around Soneva Secret is among the healthiest in the Maldives — a direct result of its remoteness and the limited human activity in Haa Dhaalu Atoll historically. The resident marine biologist leads reef monitoring, coral restoration projects, and guided snorkelling sessions. Whale sharks are encountered in the northern atolls with greater regularity than in the south. The diving programme covers sites that most Maldives divers have never visited — genuinely unexplored for many guests.
Who is Soneva Secret for?
Guests who have stayed at Soneva Fushi or Soneva Jani and want to go further. Couples who place privacy above all else and are willing to travel to the far north of the archipelago to find it. Small groups and families taking multi-bedroom retreats who want a genuinely private island experience without a full buyout. Anyone for whom the journey itself — the domestic flight, the remote atoll, the final speedboat transfer — adds to rather than detracts from the experience.
